Alumna News – Greetings from Munich

We were thrilled to receive a recent update from alumna Felicity Tomkins, winner of the NZOS 2021 Susie and Guy Haddleton Emerging Artist Award and Dame Sister Mary Leo Scholarship, who has just completed her first university year on the Artist Diploma Course (Opera Vocal Performance) at the Cincinnati College – Conservatory of Music (CCM).  She sent us an exciting update on her career all the way from Munich. We are so proud of you Felicity:

“Following on from my previous fall update, this past February I made my role debut of Jeanette in L’Amant Anonyme (J. Bologne). Our adaptation of this opera had a sparkling French 1960’s theme, with many wonderful collaborations on the project, from my fellow singers, to the orchestra and the whole creative team. This fulfilling second semester also included continuing with our daily schedule of classes, coachings and artistic development.

Since my last update, a recording to the Mahler 4 I was involved in last semester has been released, via the following link here. I am currently writing to you from Munich where I am based until July, as the first person to experience CCM Opera’s new Language and Culture Immersion Program (see this link.) This provides a great opportunity for student singers, coaches/accompanists and directors to embed themselves abroad to live and study with some of the industry’s leading conductors, directors and opera houses.

With my being based in Munich, I am immersing myself in the local German culture, learning the language with daily language classes for the next several weeks. I am also getting involved with what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ at the Teatro Nacional de Munich, as well as spending my last week in Salzburg.Looking ahead…once my time finishes in Germany, I will be en route back home to New Zealand in July for the 2022 Lexus Song Quest. I am very excited to have been selected to be a part of this prestigious competition. After some time back home, catching up with family and friends, I will be traveling back to Cincinnati, eagerly anticipating my next year starting back in August on the Artist Diploma programme at CCM.

Thank you for all the support that I have had and continue to receive from my sponsors. I look forward to continuing to share my musical adventures with you all, and seeing as many of you as I can when I am back home in Aotearoa.

Warmest wishes (und Schöne Grüße aus München),

Felicity x
