César Ulloa to return to our shores for the 2020 NZ Opera School

Internationally recognized voice teacher César Ulloa who is Chair of the Voice Department at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he has been on the faculty since 2006, will be joining the New Zealand Opera School faculty in 2020, and will be his third time attending the school. César’s first year with the school was 2017, then in 2018 and the school is very excited to see him return to our shores.

César was recently awarded the Sarlo Family Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching. For the past fourteen years he has been a master teacher for San Francisco Opera’s Adler Fellows and the Merola Opera Program.

Famed opera star Marylyn Horne declared “César Ulloa has been such an important voice pedagogue for so many years…..he deserves all praise and congratulations. I have admired the fruits of his labors constantly,” while noted mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade has praised him as “a real blessing to the musical community.”

He has served on the voice faculty at Palm Beach Atlantic University, New World School of the Arts, and as visiting professor of voice at the University of Montreal and has long been master teacher at Sociedad Internacional de Valores de Artes Mexicano (SIVAM), Mexico’s most prominent young artist program. He has given master classes internationally in China, Israel, Italy, Canada and in 2017 he was invited by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa to be a principal voice teacher for the New Zealand Opera School, and will be returning in 2020 as part of the Freemasons international Vocal Tutor alongside Italian Soprano, Nuccia Focile.

After an international opera and concert career that spans over fifteen years and with more than fifty roles in his repertoire, his singing career brought him to the NY City Opera, Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, Canadian Opera, L’Opéra de Monte Carlo, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Opera Orchestra of New York at Carnegie Hall, Cleveland Symphony, among others. A First Prize Winner of the American Opera Auditions and winner in the Matheus Sullivan Foundation, Mr. Ulloa’s appealing portrayals of more than fifty roles brought him critical acclaim throughout the U.S. and Europe performing under the baton of such prominent conductors as Zubin Mehta, Leonard Slatkin, Henry Lewis, Seiji Ozawa, Richard Bonynge, Eduardo Müller and Nicola Rescigno.

Mr. Ulloa’s students appear virtually in every major young artist program including, Santa Fe, Merola, Ravinia, Glimmerglass, MET Lindemann, Wolftrap, Washington National Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Portland Opera, Netherlands Opera, Palm Beach Opera, Music Academy of the West and the Aspen Music Festival. His professional private studio includes a extensive number of international level singers who have been First Place Winners in competitions such as the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, Operalia, Dallas Opera, Monstseratt Cabellé, Marilyn Horne Foundation “On Wings of Song”, George London, Veronica Dunne, Richard Tucker and finals in the Cardiff Singer of the World. These singers sing at the Metropolitan Opera, Paris Opera, Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago Lyric, San Francisco Opera, English National Opera, Frankfurt Opera, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Berlin, Vienna, among numerous others.
